no 2 wheel drive in np231

i have a 98tj with the stock np231 tcase. i had some 4wd issues with it and because of lack of time took it into a pretty well known local shop. the guy said all he had to do was chop off the shift rail and do "some grinding" and now i have all my 4wd without binding and no more tcase noise while driving, BUT I DONT HAVE ANY 2WD. i tried taking off the linkage and putting the tcase in 2 wheel manually but that didnt work. thanks for any help.

well i have no rear wheel drive at all. i took my rear diff cover off and while talking to the guy who worked on it we figured my rear end is out. when i jack up my front end and put it in 4wd i still sit in place. the rear drive line spins but tires dont move. when i went to drain the diff fuid, it globbed out in a nice dark silver mess of what looked like fluid, water, mud, and metal. im trying to drop the rear end right now and see the damage once i get it cleaned up.
