  • CJ7 Gear Questions

I have a 1980 CJ7 that we are doing a ground up restoration on. Well the front Axel has chipped spyder gears and a chipped ring gear. We counted the teeth on the gears and the front has 43 teeth on the ring gear and 14 teeth on the spyder gears. The rear Axel has 43 teeth on the ring gear and 16 teeth on the spyder gears. Is this a problem? Could this have caused the chipped gears? When I order the new gears should I match the rear gears?
    Thanks for any help.

there should be a marking on the ring gear that says the ratio. the number of teeth may be different from front to rear depending on actual ring gear diameter to achieve the same ratio.
    i hope that makes sense.

MY original post was wrong. I now think I have a Front Model 30 disconnect Axel according to 4 wheel drive hard ware. Does that make any sense to anybody? From what I can tell that Axel was for a 1987-95 wrangler. I am completely confused on this now. Can anybody help?!

do you have locking hubs? If so, you'll have the CJ7 Dana 30. No locking hubs, you have something newer.

It looks like a standard Dana 30. Same cover and everything. I will post some pictures of it tomorrow. It does have manual locking hubs.

count the teeth on the ring and the pinion, not the spider gears.

you can do the math or use one of the calculators.

Well the front Axel was 43/14 which is a 3.07 according to the calculator you gave me.
                Thanks
