  • Vacuum Shmackuum

On my 83 cj7 there are a million vacuum hoses that are just cut with screws in them. I want to do away with as much of the vacuum system as i can. Does anyone know how I could go about this??

Do you have emission laws in NY?

I currently have vacuum to distributor, EGR, PCV, CTO, and Charcoal canister (I think thats it!)

I'm running Howell TBI, and it does away with a lot of the vacuum lines.

You can always trace those cut lines back to vacuum source and put a rubber cap over the nipple.

I am not really concerned with emissions.... I can get it inspected.... I think that is what I will end up doing. I just installed a weber carb and one of the reasons that I think it won't idle is because of a vacuum leak...

If that's the case, scrap it and start over with new hoses. Get a vacuum diagram and replace what is required to run properly. You will want the distributor advance, EGR(it helps resist knock), PCV(unless you want an oil film in your engine compartment), brake booster(obv), etc. If it were mine, I'd replace all of it as the factory recommended even if you don't need to pass emissions tests. You don't gain any power by cutting off vacuum to emission parts unless you have leaking emission parts. You can tune the carb with no vacuum lines attached. Just cap everything. As you add more and more systems, stop when the idle gets bad. You can trace it back from there.

I was looking for that diagram on my computer somewhere. After I did the Howell TBI, I actually erased all the mess that I got to get rid of! Too much time on my hands I guess.

              Cakewalk. Bring it on!

I think my YJ has like 2 hoses and I replaced them already.

I’m not living in NY, but here in CA, unless you change to TBI (recommended by my test only smog station), you have to keep the vacuum lines. I find the diagrams in the manual hard to read, but ran across this great site, everything you need to know about the vacuum and emission control systems on the 258 with Carter BBD carb. http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/list.htm It will give you enough information to make an informed decision about what to disconnect.

Go with the Howell Injection. After my run on Sunday I stopped by my mechanic's house to discuss my "rear disc brake conversion" and the big ass tie rod/drag link set up he is going to fab for me, and I started laughing at the size of the pile of parts, vacuum lines, canisters, old air box, heat riser.... that came off my Jeep when we did my Howell. I mean really a PILE! Go simple!

If you don't do a fuel injection conversion, you must have all the vacuum lines installed and working. Your Jeep ignition and fuel system is all computer controlled and the vacuum lines are all tied into it. I wonder if a Webber can be made to work because I think the POS Carter is controlled by the computer.
