  • Sticky 1st on AX-15

I'm having some trouble with my AX-15. First gear takes quite a bit of wiggling and tricep to get it into gear from a dead stop. It gets really bad on hot days(like today) and when I've spent a lot of time in traffic. I don't think I know enough about the guts of this tranny to take it apart for a biopsy, but I would like to at least know what the problem is. Do you guys have any ideas? When I'm at a dead stop, it's difficult to put into 1st. When I'm rolling, it slides in pretty easily. When it's cold, it seems to behave. Come to think of it, reverse is a little touchy as well. I take good care of it and I serviced it a few months ago. It works absolutely perfectly except for this one little issue. I've had people tell me "Synchos!" right off the bat, but they had no idea how they worked or how to fix it.

sounds like "sychos" because usually first gear and reverse share the same "sycho" and so... but if it is, you got alot of work to do. If you want to replace the "sycho" than you gotta crack the case, and you might as well just get a rebuild kit and do a rebuild. if you are having slight problems now, I would start by dropping some cash in a jar, and ride it out until you have the cash to do the fix.

I'll just replace the tranny. I do want to learn about the guts of that thing, but I really wanted to do an AW4 upgrade. I'll rebuild the AX-15 once it's not a relied upon part of my drivetrane and then sell it. That way I can take my time and not be in a hurry to be driving again.

There you go, that would be great if you have the means... I wish I had the means, I want to go automatic, but I am just puttin' money in a jar right now...

Luckily, entire XJs are cheaper than a junkyard AX-15.

Ok, I don't know if I'm content living with a problem that I don't know everything I can about. Does anybody have a discription or a schematic of an AX-15? Do I have a broken synchro or is it just stuck? Is there any kind of additive or flush that will do any good? What can I try without cracking open the case?
