  • Questions about Re-Gearing

At the end of March I'll be getting a little bonus. :thumbs_up

I've decided to go with 4.56's. I have the T5 5 speed tranny and I am running 35" tires.

I've also decided to run a Detroit in the rear.

So, question is...which brand gears is recommended.

2nd question is...how much can I expect to pay for install?

3rd question is...whom do you recommend to do the install (I hear great things about 4Wheel Parts (jk))

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Also...my brother-in-law said he'd walk/talk me through installing the gears myself. He is currently a Ford mechanic and use to be a Jeep mechanic. Cost would be a 12 pack of Coke. Sounds great, but him being a mechanic, in charge of the parts department, and in charge of sales, he typically works 6 or more days a week...otherwise, it might be a royal pain to get our days worked out.

1.) Superior, Yukon, or Alloy USA

2.) Installs Are EXPENSIVE (unless you know someone) I think i got quoted from 4WP one time Like $2600 for the gears and install. Forget that...

3.) PM Peteyg (Peter) or Elusive (Chris) they do good work on installs and are cheaper then any of the big chains (4WP etc...)

Doing gear installs is one of the things i really want to learn. As you can see from the cost of them, i think its worth it. If you have someone that knows what they're doing and are willing to teach you. I say do it.

    Hope this helps...

        X2 on John.

        John's number at All4Wheel is: 951.277.1037

Won't cost anything to get a quote right?

I know how to swap gears but I have yet to do it. From what I have heard from others, your first time will take something like 5 or 6 attempts to get it right. I did my gear change the easy way... I bought an 8.8 and a D30 both with 4.10s already installed. If I stay with 4.10s when I do the lockers, I can probably get away with not resetting the pinion depth.

Why not 4.88s? Ive heard, (but dont know for sure) that 4.88s work great with 35s.4 west did my RE sf lift, and while thier great guys, they left a few things loose on my sus.system.

Ummmm what? Seriously, educate me because I don't get it. I thought you'd for sure have to do it if you pull out the ring gear and put it on a different carrier... is it because you're using the same ring gear and will only need to shim it to the previous lateral location? I guess that makes sense to me.

Sorry, I had to talk that out to see what you were saying.

note: NOW you see why I had John do it!!

When the T5 gives up (it is a light duty tranny), I'll probably go with a T18, which has no overdrive (1:1 4th gear).

FWIW, when I got my new gears, I got an avalanche of recommendations to take it to John. Plus when the serious wheelers tell me that they trust him to do their gears...I stopped asking people questions. I'm not saying I'm hardcore in the least, but the people who recommended him to me ARE.

John is the best gear/locker guy in SoCal, period. He also will stand behind his work.

In my first post I mentioned my brother-in-law mechanic. Well, his dealership is closing! I talked to my sister and told her to tell him that I want to be schooled in gear installation. I'm sure he'll do it. I've looked at several write-ups, and it seems fairly straight-forward, but (as someone said) patience is needed.

I'm now looking at perhaps taking that extra cash and putting in a lunchbox locker in the front, and then twin stick my dana 300. Damn, this could go on forever!
