Ok, so I thought this was sort of disgusting. As many of you know Materdaddy and I are expecting and I am looking for a safe car seat to put into Shirley (Our Jeep). In researching car seats online I came across this forum that is completely ragging on a couple who apparently had a car seat in their open jeep. They even talked about reporting it to CPS! It was absolutely hilarious, but I would like some serious thoughts about the right car seats for off-roading. They all pretty much have 5point harnesses, so they should be ok. Right?

Those people are retards - I guess they have nothing better to do. But that's what you get when living in the "Nanny State".

Jeeps have roll bars, soccer-mom vans don't. I doubt you guys will be driving like maniacs!

I would think any good car seat properly secured with the on-board seat belt would be just fine. Geeze, we rode in the back of pick-up trucks when we were kids, oh and when riding our bikes we didn't wear bicycle helmets.... now you got me started!

One of my best friends is into off-roading. She did tons of research and found that the carseats made by Britax are the safest ones you can purchase. They are pricy but well worth it.

I can't say much, Cherokees are good for toting the kids around, but even they have a heck of a time fitting there backwards facing car seats... I had a 99 cherokee and it barely worked. The car seats are so big now you really need an SUV of a full sized 4 door truck or sedan if you don't want to go the van route. My advice: go to the store with the vehicle you are gonna use, and pick a car seat, buy it, and immediately, like in the parking lot, mount the thing in the *jeep* vehicle... if it fits cool, if it don't then you can walk right back in and get a different one. I know this might sound crazy, but it really is an issue! when we decided to ditch the Expedition and go with a *smaller* vehicle, we took the car seat with us, so we could mount the car seat in the new car before we even went for a test drive. why bother if the seat don't fit? we ended up with a full size 4 door F-150.

Things to consider: how hard is it to get the kid in and out? is the kid gonna crack his melon on the door frame every time you put him in and take him out? if the car has latch, does it have latch where you want to put the car seat? can you mount the seat and close the door? in some cars you can't... depending on the car seat.

oh, and at one time, I had 3 kids in car seats... all at the same time. I said :poop: and got a Suburban for a year until my oldest got outta her car seat...

        good luck!

equally as important as the car seat is how you mount it.
infant seats fit in the back seat well, but the real car seats are pretty snug back there.
i wouldnt recommend putting your seat like this woman has hers
i wonder what is under there holding it in place?

You have to wonder how many of the mom's voiceing their concern drive the little hybrids that weight 1500lbs full of kids. I'm sure that the kids will stay in the car but that doesn't do you any good when it gets folded like a tin can. Over the years of calls I've run most fatals were small cars that were didn't stand a chance.

y'know that's the thing with these eco nuts that want to ban the SUV thing, I have 3 kids, I am not gonna get 3 car seats in a hybrid, and I am not driving a friggin' mini van... and the car seats keep gittin' bigger and they keep upping the requirement, I have a 10 yer old that should prolly be in a car seat because she is small and thin... if she put on a few pounds the school would call her obese, and if she stays where she's healthy I gotta put her in a car seat!

Subwoofer. I doubt a kid actually rides like that. I'm sure(at least I hope) that it's back there for storage so a passenger could sit shotgun.

Let's put it this way. The Jeep is approved by the DOT-it has survived some sort of crash testing. The kid seat is an approved seat and you are typically trying to drive as safely as possible, right?

My kids mom is a social worker. She's seen some really ugly stuff, but she never thought that a kid riding in the Jeep was an offense. Especially after I had the Warn bumpers, aftermarket roll cage, 4 point harness and Poison Spyders sliders!

Please raise your child to enjoy the fresh air, and like the rest of us, to take appropriate risks when wheelin' or whatever else we do in our lives.

I'll answer with an enthusiastic HELL NO! (Unless of course we don't have a choice in the matter).

I don't have any pictures, but I remember having a car seat in the YJ for my oldest when he was still a tot. I think it was made by Greco? The kid was going nowhere in that thing. I wasn't wheeling the Jeep yet but I felt very comfortable with the set up in case of any accident.

I just came across this thread.
My kids are grown now. But I wheeled all time in my '87 YJ with 2 car seats in the li'l back seat. I got stuck more than once and had to get tugged out. THey slept through it all.
