  • Got room for another FNG?

Hi I'm Lynn, 50 y.o. guy from York, PA. I was led here by my friend blevisay, from earlycj5.com

Here's a pic of my rig, '71 CJ5 with some mods.

Project for this weekend is to repair my frame at both rear spring shackle hangers

Anyone else here run an old CJ5?

    Anyone here run drilled drums?

    Lynn

Hello sir, welcome .To enlighten me, why would you drill your drums?

The application is similar to vented discs, only better. The shoes force any gasses out through the holes so there's never any brake fade on long, dry braking.
But the big benefit is wet braking. Shoes force the water out the holes after deep fording. No more brake loss after a deep crossing, no more riding the brakes hoping they dry out before you need them...
I drilled mine about 3 years ago. I have brake performance as good as disc, maybe better in some circumstances.
(running 11" drums at all corners)
      I got the idea here

Then did it myself. Works great!

Sam, I used a 1/8" bit. Made a jig, set it up on a drill press. Drums are cast, they drill easy.
I used 3 rings of holes on my 11" drums, 18 holes per ring, so 54 per drum. Instead of rows (rings) around the circumference, the holes should be staggered to get a full sweep of the shoe. I didn't recognize that when I did mine. You need to lay out a pattern so the holes are equidistant, or you will throw off the balance of the drum.
You could get away with only 2 sets of holes. Look at the pic closely at the CH Topping site, you can see how each pair of holes "move" in relation to the edge.
I deburred each hole on the inside with a dremmel and a stone.
Blevisay, the other new guy here, just did his drums using a dividing head on a Bridgeport machine
Bill, did you test them yet?????????????

These pictures are much clearer, thanks. I haven't been in a machine shop in quite a few years, so no access to a dividing head, but I'm sure a can fab a jig that will get the job done.
