Ok, here are my pictures from the weekend. I awoke early on Saturday March 13 and headed out east along Interstate 8 to the small desert town of Ocotillo. From there it was just a few miles north along Highway S2 to Doz Cabezas Road out to where Doug (FishPOET)and the others where camped. Clark and James from Arizona, had been in contact with me over at expedition portal about exploring Anza Borrego, so we would head out along a few trails the next day.

Views of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern railroad from Dos Cabezas Road.

        Parked at the trail head.

        Starting up Mortero Palms Canyon.

The path winds through a maze of boulders.

        Hello there!

The Mortero palm grove is one of the densest in Anza-Borrego, arising from the seeps amid a jumble of huge boulders. It makes for a cool spot to rest on warm days.

        Keep on climbing...

        ...and climbing.

It gets a little easier here.

        Starting down into Goat Canyon.

        Around the waterfall.

At last we can see it!

I don't think too much is going on around here...

        Carrizo Gorge.

        Sunday morning.

            Great pics and report, Doug!

Was the route difficult to find?

How comfortable did you feel leaving your stuff and vehicle?

I've read cautions about this in books and they made it sound like people were just wandering around looking for stuff to steal, but it seems a bit remote for that.

I look foward on doing this when I get my feet broken back into my boots.

I had the route loaded on to my GPS but in reality the trail was very well worn and easy to follow. Even in the boulder sections there were quite a few cairns to follow.

There are quite a few stories of vehicles and camps getting broken in to. It is very close to the border and a known area for illegals to be in. I would have preferred to have someone stay in camp but it wasn't going to keep me from going on the hike.

That's for sure! And I don't even have locking doors on my Jeep.

Finally had time to do something with my pics. Just uploading a few as most look similar.

                    My transportation and accommodation

Heading up before the palm oasis

                    re-energized after seeing the tracks

                    That's our group over there

                    really

no one was eager to go much further than this, those are open grates with a great view to the canyon floor.

                        Those are awesome pics.
I'd like to get a look at this thing.
                        In Ocatillo eh?
                        When is the next one?
Did anyone hoof it up to the failed tunnel opening?

Post up a google map of the location.

Maybe in the fall, I'd go with you. It might be getting a little warm now.

I have a couple of friends who want to make this hike in the fall. Once the desert temps are down, we'll have to figure something out. Pretty long hike, but definitely worth it!
