um ladder is gone. but there is some ladders in some of the mines just look up in wall street mine. and it has been cutoff so people don't go up it.

Well, yeah. I was thinking more from a rocklimbing standpoint.

I found this one mine a couple of years ago. I had to crawl on my belly for 20ft at the entrance. It was about 2ft around. Inside, it opened up into a regular sized mine. It went in a good half mile with multiple levels. It had a lot of equipment in it. I remember an entire mining car! It would be REALLY hard to find again. The only reason I found it the first time was because I stepped over it and felt a really cold breeze blowing out of it. It was 120* that day so a cold 2ft hole was actually pretty inviting. I don't think I have the guts for extreme cave exploration any more. I'll check out the big, safe ones but no more rappelling and traversing wood beams.

Just a quick history note: The spot you folks call Wall Street Overview, is properly named Sue(Sioux)Falls. The area you would be standing on is the Sue Mine. The Sue mine was the first Silver producing mine in the Calicos. The only use of Wall Street was to reach the Sue mine by a 100ft. ladder. Try that with a lunch bucket in your hand. Just thought you might like to know. Ride safe Chuck

I want more history lessons! That's cool! Everything I know about the history of calico came from ghost story books and trail guides. I would love to know what all those broken, collapsed mines were and used to look like. From what I read, there were roads and rail lines all through that area when the mines were active.

Hey Shad,

There is a great book about the mines and features of Calico. The book is "Guide To The Calicos: Ghost Mining Camps and Scenic Areas" by Bill Mann. The book is available in Barstow at both the Barstow Museum and the Discovery Center. Bill Mann wrote 6 books that are a loaded with local history. My favorite is his book on Lucerne. I would show to you but I won't be able to make this trip. Have fun and be safe.

I'm not 100% sure where the main camp is going to be. I know it's open to anywhere you wish to stop. But I'm sure there is a group spot planned. I'm leaving Friday morning and should arrive early afternoon.

I will have the banner, but then again, I think I always say that and forget it half the time. In case I do, Russ has the other MJR banner, so one of us is bound to remember, hehehe (most likely him) (thanks Russ!!)
