    bThis was in the Sat. issue of the SUN

    Public comment is being sought concerning the potential withdarwal of 332,000 acres next to Twentynine Palms MCAGCC.The land is managed by the BLM but the Marines want it withdrawn for 5 years from settlement,sale,and mining claimsto preserve the ststus quo while they complete evironmental studies on a proposal to expand the base.
    BLM Barstow Field Manager Roxie Trost said the the land remains open to puplic access and rec.use but have been segregated for settlement,sale,or mining since 2008 when the Marines started the process.
    A draft EIS is expected to be released in Jan.
    A 90 day comment peiriod on the proposal closes

    A notice of the withdrawal proposal was puplished in Wendnesdays Federal Register.It is online at http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/info/fed_reg_archives.html
    When the Navy filed its 2008 appl.,some comments concerned loss of public access to Johnson Valley,a popular off-highway area.Those comments will be addressed in the draft EIS,Trost said.
