  • Tranny....

ok as some of you know i aiming to get a jeep by the end of next month but just in case i might get it by the end of this month. Now this is has been on my mind... i didnt know if i were to put this topic here but here it goes. When getting my jeep i will be gettin the rubicon, i want to kno what type of transmission should i go for if i plan to go offroading. Like what do you guys suggest, should i get automatic or manual? i am totally unsure considering this will be my first off-road car. so anyhelp would be helpful!

Lots of people say auto if you're going to be doing rocks!!! I have a manual, because I didn't know any better when looking!

I,m a newbie, but I got a Rubicon 6 spd manual. The gearing in 4 low is quite low compared to non-rubicon. It is much easier to use the clutch because the low gearing allows you to start from a stop, even on a steep hill or in rocks, without using the gas pedal.. It will idle up/through some pretty steep stuff. I thought about the auto, but so far I'm glad I got the manual. Which is better may be more a matter of personal preference.

The "manual vs automatic" question never gets solved. Some people think automatic is the only way to go, others hate 'em. I've driven both on/off the rocks, and personally I prefer the manual, assuming the gearing is deep enough to offer you good control of speed. FWIW, I run 4.10's, 4:1 and 33" tires, and it works very well for me.

Auto makes climbing rocks easier, but if you want easier stay on the pavement.

hm so basically pple prefer both, yeah ima be doin rocks and muddin. i woulda probably thought that the manual would help you out more... but finding this out i find out that the auto helps out as well. hm this is kinda a hard debate to choose because like i like both. hmm i dont know what to choose..i like the manual and like i all my previous cars were manual but that was mostly for drag strips and racing.. considering this is something different for me i dont know lol. because luckily idont have to sit through stop and go traffic so i can choose either or. this sounds kinda like a tough decision...okok

when you guys do some serious muddin or rockin, like how badly is the transmission banged up? like how hard do you use it? like do you guys get what im saying?

I like driving and motor sports. All my cars have been manual (OK apart from the one I have now) and I am glad I got a stick Jeep. I like working the clutch and cogs while climbing over serious rocks: that's 4 - 4.5 trails.

I like playing with the clutch and shifting gears. Soooo the best one to get.........is the one you like. Thats the right answer.

i prefer a stickshift most of the time.

in my jeep i have an auto and 98% of the time i'd rather be shifting myself. it's the 2% of the time that i'm pointed 45 degrees in the air stuck on an obstacle that makes me glad i have an auto.

also an auto tranny is much softer on driveline components, especially with a stock vehicle (aka break less stuff). the "slush" factor puts a lot less stress on the driveshafts and axle shafts.

                  just my opinion.

You know it was just a joke... I like manuals but trust me sometimes it sucks when everyone stops on a hill climb and your basically laying down trying to start going again. haha.

lol so today i went and test drove the auto, i loved it! so easy to handle and not much to worry. I have to still test the manual as soon as we pulld outa the lot for the spin my friend and i took it behind the dealership and climbed a curb to see what it was like when it went up like things. I didnt feel anything at all like it instantly pushed me towards wishin i could get it now. But i need to like wait a little bit more. But so far im leaning a little more to the automatic side, but who knows i still gotta test drive the stick. i want the jeep so badly! lol
