  • Replacing the 4.2 with?

Ok here it is I just picked up my daughters 1992 2wd Cherokee. It needs a rebuild 285,000 mile or so. Not burning oil just sounds a little loose.

I have 4.2, T5 tranny going to Auto, with the york compressor setup.

    What would you do?

1 Put in a rebuilt 4.0 with fuel injection
2 Put on the 4.0 head on the 4.2 block with fuel injection.
3 or Stroke the 4.0 with the 4.2 crack and go to 4.6 with fuel injection

What ever I do I still have to pass smog.

I say go with the stroker. You can get it to pass smog. The only thing is you will need premium gas so as long as its not a DD, I would stroke it.

Just my two cents worth, but I agree with Nagal. I would go with either the crane powermax cam (PN crn-750501) or the crane truck power cam (PN crn-753905) You shouldn't have much problem with smog so long as your engine looks factory and you can keep a secret.

I have a 1990 4.0 and AX15 in my CJ and I am real happy with it. I am gathering parts for a stroker, but I would not do a swap and a fresh engine at the same time. Too much troubleshooting and tinkering for the swap. Swap and rebuild later, do not try to break in a new engine during an engine & EFI swap

I think I'm going to install the 4.0 first, than stroke it. But with work and school I haven't had any time.
I have $2000 worth of fence on the ground I need to put up first.
              Damn Honey due list.

How soon do you need the tranny?

                some time soon.

The tranny is lazy in the morning or when cold, it does not like to up shift, and the rear housing bushing is so bad we can keep rear seals in it.
so it is a to and from school rig for one of our kids.

What tranny do you plan on running? '92 has both a manual and an auto trans engine computer, and the auto as a TCU as well as the ECU

If you plan on smoging the thing the auto TCU not hooked up will cause your check engine light to stay on.

                    Good question!

The donor has a 5 speed in it. Right now I have a T5 in my cj, but I was going to put in a auto 904. (Maybe I can get my wife to go out with me if she can drive.) I have all the parts to convert to auto now. Just no time.

I was hoping that the donors manual trans would not matter on the computor, as there is nothing to hook up to the manual trans other than a speed senor.

I dont care about torqe convertor lockup.

                    Is there anything I'm missing?

If you are using an 904, what flywheel and crank senssor will you use?

The manual computer will work just fine with a non-computer controlled automatic.

not sure about the smog though.

you should be able to buy a mopar injection under hood lable and avoid the smog ref

I dont have the website handy but I saw where a guy modified the bellhousing of his trans and made a brackit to hold the sensor, I'll use a flex plate that will work with the sensor I have now. Don't know if it will work, but hay gotta try something.
