  • NP231 just went to crap!

[COLOR="DarkGreen"]I was out in last Saturday evening's snowstorm in 4H in my '06 LJ and suddenly started hearing a loud squeaking was noise eminating from my drivetrain whilst underway.
Monday AM I took it to my dealership who tells me I need a new TRANSFER CASE! Also tells me they run $1200. I, however, will only pay a $50 deductible as my wife was smart enough to talk me into taking the Chrysler lifetime bumper to bumper mechanical extended warranty!
    Merry Freaking Christmas or what?!

PS- the Body Armour Rock Rails just arrived from Quadratec this week.(on sale for only $239 + s/h!) I'll post some pics once installed!

you could probably get a used np231 and a Tera Low kit for $1200. I've seen np231s that cheap. post a pic of your rig when you get your new gear on.

How many miles are on it?

When mine started sqeeking, it was actually the front drive shaft u-jjoint was failing.

Those are a lot cheaper than a t-case.

x2 on that. Sounds like the mechanics are goombas. I have a T-case with 180k+. I heard a sqeek coming back from Flagstaff, it was the front drive shaft. D

Do you know what the issue is with the T-Case? How many miles are on it? I have a friend with an 06 LJ and his just went out as well. The dealer is telling him it rusted and that is what caused the failure but he has not done any type of water crossings so we can not figure out why it would be rusted inside.

              Thoughts?

The typical issues with the 231 is running low on oil, chain stretch on older units. As for rust inside the case the vent tube can become plugged with dirt/ oil fume build up and or the check valve can become stuck in the open position. If this happens moisture will be drawn in through the air as the transfer case cools down after driving causing the rust.

                  How many miles you ask?

                  Dudes!
It's only got 65k on it. I will mention your concerns tmrw when it's getting installed.
                  Thanks for the insights!

The after picture is definitely an improvement. In the first pic the Jeep is way too clean. Something about a clean Jeep just isn't natural. Rock rails are a big improvement over the step. I figured if I ever got too old to jump into my Jeep I'd just use a rope ladder.

You know I didn't realize before that you were in New Jersey. From the viewpoint of a Southern Californian (as most of us on this forum are), an NP231 with rust inside, especially after only 65K miles just doesn't add up, but back east where they salt the roads--who knows? That road salt is evil to vehicle bodies, fasteners, and potentially mechanicals. My Jeep came from Ohio, and I know all about rusted fasteners and broken bolts. Ask to see the inside of the old transfer case and snap some pics if you could. This could prove educational.
