The mining camp that became Animas Forks was settled in 1873. A post office was established in 1875. The summer population in the boom years was 450 people and 30 permanent structures. The boom ended in the 1890’s and the post office closed in 1917. Animas Forks was a ghost town by 1920.
The state of Colorado estimates that 250,000 people visit Animas Forks annually. 10 structures remain.
